Supercopa de España de Baloncesto History
The Supercopa de España de Baloncesto is a regenerated version of the earlier Super Cup tournament which originally took place annually from 1984 onwards. Originally, the format consisted of a single game, placing the cup winners against the league winners, similar to the season-opener of the Spanish football season. First called the Federation Cup, the Super Cup was a mid-season game which broke up the regular season and acted as an interval for the ACB League. The original Super Cup lasted only a few years before it was canceled at the beginning of the 1989-1990 season due to a lack of interest shown by supporters.
The Super Cup remained on the sidelines for almost 15 years, until it was eventually revived in 2004 and re-branded as the Supercopa ACB. The format of the competition changed to include four of the best teams from the previous season and the tournament was moved to a pre-season slot. This change increased audiences and interest, and today the Supercopa de España de Baloncesto is one of the most watched pre-season competitions in European basketball.
Supercopa de España de Baloncesto Milestones
Since the Supercopa de España de Baloncesto was rebranded and moved to a pre-season slot in 2004, FC Barcelona has dominated both finals appearances and titles. They had previously won the Super Cup once under the old format, in 1987, and have won the new Supercopa de España de Baloncesto five times with a total of ten finals appearances.
Baskonia is the joint-second most successful team in the competition with Real Madrid,
both of whom have four titles to their name, although one of Real Madrid's titles came under the old format in 1985.
The finals are generally very tight, but none was closer than the 2008 final between CAI Zaragoza and Baskonia. The lead changed several times during a tense affair in front of the home Zaragoza crowd before Baskonia edged it with a last-minute basket to win 86-85.
