The Afro-Cuban jazz legend
Cuba—a land that is mainly known for great cigars, tropical beaches, and retro urban architecture. But for music aficionados, Cuba is home to a national icon: the legendary pianist, composer, and musical director Chucho Valdes. In the world of music, few artists are as prolific and long-tenured as Chucho Valdes. With a career spanning more than five decades, there is no doubt why Chucho is much respected and revered in the music industry. Chucho was born in Quivican, Havana, Cuba in 1941. Having come from a musical family where his father was a legendary pianist and musical director, Chucho had a natural inclination to music at a very young age. He first made his mark in the local music scene as a founding member of the Orquestra Cubana de Música Moderna, which he formed with other highly acclaimed Cuban musicians. He also founded one of Cuba’s most famous Latin-jazz bands, Irakere. Both bands became two of the most prominent figures in Afro-Cuban jazz at the time. While working with the two groups he founded, Chucho also maintained a solo career, which brought him international acclaim.
A multi-award-winning musician
Throughout his career, Chucho has recorded more than twenty-five albums since the release of his first in 1964. Among these are studio albums, live albums, and extended plays. He is also a recipient of several Grammy Awards, one of which was for Irakere’s live album "Live at Newport" in 1978. Another Grammy he won was for his album "Juntas Para Siempre" in 2009, a collaboration with his father. He also received the title of Honorary Doctor of Music from Berklee College of Music in 2011. Chucho Valdes still actively tours to this day, and if you’d like to catch the maestro himself perform live in a venue near you, be sure to get your tickets here on StubHub.
