Born Peter Gene Hernandez, Bruno Mars has been making his mark in the music industry since he lent his vocals to hit songs “Nothin’ on You” by B.o.B and Travie McCoy’s “Billionaire”, both of which became worldwide successes! Mars’ musical talent doesn’t stop at him, with his parents meeting each other during a show they were performing, his father played percussion while his mother was a singer and hula dancer. At the tender age of three Mars experienced his first stage performance as he joined his uncle, impersonation Elvis, on stage! His family continued to play and perform, and Mars himself admits “Everyone in my family sings, plays instruments. It’s what we do.” Mars himself learned guitar, citing guitar legend Jimi Hendrex as his influence. In his teens Mars switched from the Little Elvis title, to impersonating Michael Jackson, and saw the teen forming a band with his schoolmates.
Suffice to say Bruno Mars was destined in the music world, and after graduating high school he moved to Los Angeles, California in pursuit of a music career! The stage name Bruno Mars came from a nickname his father had given him as a toddler, “Bruno” was in regards to the likeness he shared with ex-pro wrestler Bruno Sammatino. “Mars” came about due to the trouble he found when beginning his career. With a Hispanic surname like Hernandez, much of the music business pigeonholed Mars as another Latino artist, so he came up with the surname “Mars” in reference to girls who use to say he was out of this world!
Bruno Mars actually began work as a music producer, after a failed record deal with Motown records lead to a publishing deal with Westside Independent and the meeting of songwriter and producer Phillip Lawrence. Producer Steve Lyndsey quickly took Mars and Lawrence under his wing, helping the duo to hone their song writing skills and understand the mechanics behind a good pop song. During this time, Bruno Mars became an acknowledged producer in his own right, writing song for Alexandra Burke, Travie McCoy, Flo Rida and Brandy. By two thousand and ten Bruno Mars looked ready to debut, and soon released his first and number one single “Just The Way You Are”. The debut album, Doo-Wops & Hooligans soon followed and Mars’ success has been rising ever since, so don’t forget to buy your Bruno Mars tickets here at Ticketbis!
Mars’ debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans released in two thousand and ten, with “Just the Way You Are” standing as the album’s leading single! When asked about the album’s title, Mars said “’It explains the two-sides of me. Doo-wop is a special form of music I grew up on. It’s straight to the point, very simple. I have songs like that... I have that simple, romantic side of me but I’m also just a young, regular dude and that’s like the hooligan side!” Co-produced with Mars’ Smeezington team, the album is a proud piece of work for Mars, Phillip Lawrence and Ari Levine who have all proudly talked about the production! With tracks like “Grenade”, “The Lazy Song”, “Marry You” and “Count on Me” and of course the leading single, “Just the Way You Are”, the album is full of instant hits! Critics likewise believed so, as upon release The New York Times named Doo-Wops a “fantastically polyglot record that shows Bruno Mars to be a careful study across a range of pop songcraft”, while Kevin Barber, of Consequence of Sound, said of the album “This fulfilling ten track album has very few holes, and if this is just a taste of what he has in the vaults for either himself or for other artists, he should be racking up some Grammy’s shortly.” Needless to say Barber’s prediction proved right, as in the following year Mars received a Grammy Award for best Male Pop Vocal Performance, among a slew of Grammy nominations!
