The four guys from Sheffield consist of, Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Nick O’Malley and Matt Helders, with former band member Andy Nicholson leaving just after the band released their debut album. Arctic Monkeys first album ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not’, became the fastest-selling debut album in British history. Songs from the album, such as, ‘Dancing Shoes’, ‘Mardy Bum’, ‘Fluorescent Adolescent’, ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ and ‘I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor’ were big selling hits, with the last two songs going straight to number one in the UK. The album sold 363,735 copies in the first week, making it fastest selling album in English history. Although the same success was not matched in the States, their album still received a lot of attention, entering in at No.24 on the Bilboard album chart, selling over 30,000 copies in just its first week. The band continued to sell and for this reason ‘Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not’ became the second fastest selling album in the States. Extensive touring around America publicized Arctic Monkeys even further, which earned the band huge critical acclaim.
The Sheffield quartet have gone onto match the same success as other similar bands such as Oasis and The Strokes, with the NME Magazine declaring the band’s debut album, the "5th greatest British album of all time". Arctic Monkeys have won numerous awards for their contribution to music, including, Best British Breakthrough Act, Best British Group, Best British Album and Best British Group.
