The history of Arcade Fire spans as far back as 2001, when Win Butler and Josh Deu founded the band in Montreal, when the two attended Phillip Exeter Academy high school. The school itself has played host to a list of notable alumni, however, both Butler and Deu continued their education together, developing the musical ideals that later manifested into Arcade Fire! While rehearsing at McGill University, the both Butler and Deu, met with Régine Chassagne who chose to join them in their endeavour! The trio then began recording demos and performing live, with the band at the time consisting of Win Butler (Lead vocalist and songwriter), Regine Chassagne (Singer and multi-instrumentalist), Josh Deu (Guitarist and co-founder), Tim Kyle (multi-instrumentalist), Alan Lavian (bassist) and Dane Mills (guitarist/drummer)! Brandan Reed, who has made an established name for his short films and numerous band collaborations, was a neighbour of both Butler and Chassagne at the time, and also collaborated with the band for a good three years!
In 2002, this original line-up soon began to dissolve when recording for their self-titled EP lead to many line-up changes. Both Alan Reid and Tim Kyle after the EP recording left to join respective bands AIDS Wolf and Wild Light, while an argument between Reed and Butler saw Reed quit the band on-stage! Co-founder Josh Deu also left the band, however, he left to continue his studies at university, and has since collaborated on the visual aspects of the band! Multi-instrumentalist Richard Reed Parry later filled the missing gap, along with Butler’s brother William and Tim Kingsbury! The band soon began their promotion of the EP, playing live concerts in and around Montreal! Arcade Fire soon acquired a contract with record label Merge Records, and in 2004, Arcade Fire released their debut album, Funeral!
Released in both Canada and February, the album took its name in reference to the several deaths of relatives of various band members at the time, the sombre element undoubtedly influenced songs like “Une année sans limière (A Year Without Light)”, “In the BackSeat and “Haiti”. Needless to say, the album was well received by critics with Pitchfork, Filter, No Ripcord and MTV2 all labelling Funeral as album of the year in 2005! In aid of promotion for the album Arcade Fire embarked on a small club tour and participated in numerous festivals including the Halifax Pop Explosion, Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, the Sasquatch! Music Festival, Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds Festival, Electric Picnic, and the Lowlands Festival! During this period the band also made it on the cover of the Canadian Times magazine bringing them even more much-needed exposure! It was this album that garnered Arcade Fire with numerous awards including LAS Magazine album of the decade, Under the Radar’s number one in the top two hundred albums of the decade! The album also received a Grammy nomination for Best Album of the Year Awards, winning Studio8’s Album of the Year award and winning PLUG’s Album Art/Packaging of the Year!
