Born in Tai Po, Hong Kong, in 1961, Lau became a successful actor in the 1980s thanks to his roles in TV series The Emissary, Yang Guo and The Return of the Condor Heroes. Andy Lau managed to somehow maintain a successful acting career, becoming one of the most commercially successful film actors in Hong Kong in the 1980s, while also pursuing a career as a singer and musician.
Lau is one of the Four Heavenly Kings of Cantopop, a term created by the Oriental Daily News in 1992 which refers to the four biggest male superstars in Hong Kong at the time. Andy Lau is alongside Jacky Cheung, Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. These four singers dominated the music scene at the time, not only in Hong Kong but also across China and countries with a large Chinese population like Australia and Singapore. Lua is, perhaps, the pick of the bunch. He was entered into the Guinness World Records for Most Awards Won by a Cantopop Artist, in fact, by 2000 he had already won nearly 300 awards. That's not all, in 2018 Andy Lau had an Asteroid named after him. The asteroid, discovered in 2001 by Bill Yeung was named Asteroid 55381 Lautakwah in his honour. A rare privilege indeed.
